Self-referral scans available now

You can currently self-refer for the following scans (subject to eligibility):

Whole-body MRI cancer screening

Look for signs of cancer in multiple areas of the body

Our whole-body MRI scan is designed to check for signs of cancer from your head to your knees in one appointment. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images and does not use the type of radiation used in X-rays or CT scans.

This scan may be suitable for you if you want a broad cancer check, especially if you have a family history of cancer or other risk factors, and if you want to explore a self-pay option without waiting for a referral.

The scan usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. Images are reviewed by two consultant radiologists who specialise in cancer imaging, and you and your GP receive a report within two weeks.

Price: £1,750. No VAT payable.
A 50% deposit is taken over the phone to confirm your appointment. The balance is paid on the day of the scan.

.

Fatty Liver Assessment (LiverLab MRI)

Check your liver health quickly and safely

Our Fatty Liver Assessment uses a specialist MRI technique called LiverLab to measure fat in the liver. It is designed to help identify fatty liver disease and support earlier conversations about treatment or lifestyle changes.

The scan is non-invasive, involves no needles, and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. It produces results that show liver fat levels and can also help with monitoring changes over time.

Price: £350 (£150 when combined with whole-body MRI scan). No VAT payable.

Need a different scan?

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre also provides other MRI imaging, scans, as well as CT and PET-CT scans, including cardiac scans. These are arranged through a GP or your consultant.

If you are not sure which scan you need, please contact us. Our team can explain the options and the best route to booking.

Is self-referral right for you?

Self-referral may be suitable if you want fast access to a selected private scan and would like our team to review whether it is safe and appropriate for you.

Self-referral may be suitable if you:
  • are aged 18 or over.
  • are registered with a GP who can receive your report and discuss any next steps with you.
  • want to book a whole-body MRI cancer screening or fatty liver assessment on a self-pay basis.
  • are willing to complete a medical history and MRI safety questionnaire before booking.
  • are currently having treatment for cancer or are in follow-up care for previous cancer
  • are involved in professional sport or affiliated with a professional sports club
  • have certain implants, devices, recent surgery, metal fragments or other MRI safety issues that need review before a booking can go ahead.

Submitting a self-referral form does not guarantee that a scan will be booked. We review the information you provide first, and in some cases the information may mean that the scan is delayed or cannot go ahead.

A self-referred MRI scan is not a replacement for standard screening tests such as bowel screening, mammography, cervical screening, PSA testing or low-dose CT where these are recommended for you. It is important that you remain under the care of your GP and continue to follow normal medical advice and screening invitations.

If you have symptoms, are worried about a change in your health, or think you may need urgent care, please speak to your GP, NHS 111 or emergency services as appropriate. This page is for booking information only and should not delay you from seeking medical advice. This approach is consistent with CAP guidance, which says healthcare advertising should not discourage essential medical treatment or supervision.

How self-referral works

How to apply

Step 1

Choose your scan

Select whole-body MRI cancer screening or fatty liver assessment and complete the online self-referral form. You will be asked for your medical history, MRI safety information and GP details.

We review your details

Our team checks that the scan is safe and appropriate for you. For whole-body MRI, we aim to contact you within five working days once the form has been reviewed.

Book your appointment

If the scan is suitable, we will arrange your appointment and explain anything you need to do before you attend.

Your report is shared

For whole-body MRI, you and your GP receive a report, and urgent findings are escalated. The self-referral process also requires you to have a GP so that future care can be discussed through the right clinical route.
