A major upgrade to Paul Strickland Scanner Centre that will see a revamp of our PET-CT facilities as well as our patient waiting area is on track for completion over the coming months.

The upgrade will not only improve patient comfort but could also lead to more PET-CT patients being scanned than before on any given day than currently.

Corridor to the new waiting area

Central to the project is replacement of our two current PET-CT scanners with a single machine that will be able to scan more patients than our two current scanners combined, while producing superior images at the same time. The scanner features highly advanced new artificial intelligence software that enables the machine to produce better images more quickly than older scanners.

The new scanner is the third new machine being installed at the centre in recent months, after two similarly advanced new MRI scanners were put into service last year. Mr Damion Melsome, Paul Strickland Scanner Centre Operations Manager, said: “We’re making good progress.

The next milestones are 25 and 26 March, when the new modular units arrive and which are integral to the new architecture. We expect to take delivery of the new PET-CT scanner in June and for it to come online in November following completion of the scanner room.

At that point we will begin to decommission the old scanners. “This level of investment is a massive achievement and shows our commitment to Mount Vernon. The team and I are sincerely grateful to our supporters, who have helped make this upgrade possible. It will make a big difference to patient care.”
